Open Book Touch launches as compact open-source e-reader

The panel delivers 800 x 480 native resolution at 220 PPI. For ePaper newspaper editions, where small-column typography and dense layouts are common, this density may produce observable artifacts at typical reading distances of 25–35 cm.
Front lighting is provided by ten LEDs with adjustable color temperature, enabling warm-to-cool tuning for ambient conditions. No external light source is required for nighttime use.
Processing is handled by an ESP32-S3 dual-core microcontroller, paired with 8 MB of RAM and 16 MB of internal flash. A microSD card slot supports expandable storage for sideloaded document libraries. Wireless book transfer is implemented over Wi-Fi; cellular connectivity is absent. The compute allocation is minimal relative to general-purpose computing but adequate for static-page E-Ink rendering of ePub and TXT documents.
Firmware, Format Coverage, and Document Workflow
The firmware is open-source, permitting community modification and redistribution of the entire software stack. Native format support is limited to TXT and ePub — adequate for text-heavy content but a meaningful gap for users reliant on PDF-based regional newspaper editions, which constitute a significant share of available ePaper archives. Third-party format extensions are technically feasible under the open license but are not part of the default firmware.
The device's open document handling model parallels broader European administrative shifts toward standardized digital workflows, including recent Council and Parliament agreements on digital declaration systems for cross-border worker documentation.
