India Launches Mobile Manufacturing Incentives to Boost Domestic Electronics Production
According to reports from The Hindu and Investment Guru India, the scheme aims to accelerate local value addition and reduce dependencies on imported components.

India's newly notified Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) introduces additional incentives for domestic brands, a policy shift that could indirectly influence the supply chain and component availability for e-paper devices in the region. According to reports from The Hindu and Investment Guru India, the scheme aims to accelerate local value addition and reduce dependencies on imported components.
Policy Focus on Backward Integration
The core of the MPMS is to boost backward integration within India's electronics ecosystem. Industry analysis indicates the scheme is designed to build on previous successes, where mobile phone production reportedly increased 33-fold and exports surged 165-fold between FY15 and FY26. The policy provides targeted support for Indian brands through extra incentives for sourcing components domestically and investing in research and development. This is part of a broader strategic shift from an assembly-led model to one centered on components and materials manufacturing.
Component Manufacturing Momentum
The scheme is expected to leverage existing momentum under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). Reports note that 106 projects have been approved under the ECMS, with 38 plants already operational and 16 more in advanced construction stages. Recent approvals include 31 additional proposals with a projected investment of ₹6,844 crore. The projects span critical components like multilayer PCBs, display modules, sensors, and raw materials such as acetylene black and electrolyte additives. This push for localized production of fundamental electronics parts is a key data point for hardware analysts.
Implications for E-Paper Device Supply Chains
For the e-paper hardware niche, the significance lies in the potential long-term effects on component sourcing. A strengthened domestic supply chain for display modules, PCBs, and sensors could, over time, alter cost structures and lead times for device manufacturers sourcing from or assembling in India. The policy's emphasis on building "genuinely indigenous electronics products with Indian IP and design input" signals a sustained governmental push. Stakeholders in the e-reader and digital signage sectors should monitor the ECMS project pipeline for any developments in relevant component categories, such as display controllers or flexible circuit boards.
