Barnes & Noble NOOK Library Displays Missing Book Covers Across All Platforms

According to Good e-Reader, Barnes & Noble NOOK hardware, the companion Android and iOS applications, and the B&N web library are rendering purchased titles without cover art due to a metadata pipeline failure.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Library Displays Missing Book Covers Across All Platforms

The defect has persisted across approximately three weeks and currently affects the NOOK GlowLight 4, NOOK GlowLight 4 Plus, and NOOK Hub-based tablets. In-book text rendering remains intact; only the thumbnail and library-grid image layer is failing, which points to a backend image-sourcing problem rather than a device-side decoding error.

Scope of the failure

The fault replicates identically across four entry points: the GlowLight 4 e-reader, the GlowLight 4 Plus e-reader, NOOK Hub tablets, the iOS and Android NOOK applications, and the user's library view on the Barnes & Noble website. Because the failure appears on dedicated e-readers, tablets, mobile apps, and standard web rendering alike, the common denominator is server-side cover-image delivery, not panel-level decoding or local storage corruption. Purchased books open normally; titles, pagination, and body text continue to load. What is absent is the cover asset that the client expects from the B&N metadata service when populating the library grid, including any cover-resolution images used for the "Now Reading" carousels on the GlowLight home screens.

Vendor response and remediation path

B&N support has confirmed the defect in correspondence reviewed by Good e-Reader: "We have identified this issue and our backend team is working on it. A fix will be implemented in the near future." No firmware or app update has shipped to date. Users on dedicated e-readers should continue to check for over-the-air updates on a stable Wi-Fi connection; users on mobile apps should confirm auto-update is enabled in the respective app stores. Until the backend image manifest is corrected, manual library refresh will not restore covers, and locally sideloaded EPUB metadata will not substitute for the missing store-asset, since the missing field is the B&N-issued image, not the embedded one inside the EPUB container.

What to track

Three operational points are worth monitoring. First, confirm the failure is global rather than local by signing into the B&N website library from a desktop browser; if covers are absent there as well, the defect is confirmed server-side and no device-level troubleshooting will resolve it. Second, for users navigating by cover art in low-light conditions, title text is rendering correctly and remains legible on the GlowLight 4 and 4 Plus frontlit displays, so reading flow is unaffected even if the library looks bare. Third, any user with active reading sessions should avoid factory-resetting the device in an attempt to restore thumbnails; the defect is not local and a reset will not recover the missing image assets, while it will erase locally cached state. B&N has provided no firm remediation date beyond "near future," and the technical support channel appears to have been unaware of the issue prior to inbound reports.
